As expected, the holiday season, coupled with my trip to Southeast Asia (where I'm writing this) has derailed my schedule somewhat. I'm still working on the art for the last couple of pages of "The Disappeared", while beginning the script for the next Twilight Lady story (in the midst of getting over my jet lag from a near 20-hour flight).

So things are progressing slower than normal, and the next Twilight Lady update won't be available for another week. But... expect normal service to resume when I return to the US in February.

Hey, my run of updating without fail for 34 consecutive Sundays was nice while it lasted, wasn't it?

In case you were wondering where Lianmei's speech pattern comes from, here's a quick quote from the Wikipedia entry on Singlish:

"The vocabulary of Singlish consists of words originating from English, Malay (mainly Bahasa Melayu rather than Indonesian), Hokkien, Cantonese, and to a lesser extent various other Indic and Sinitic languages, while Singlish syntax resembles southern varieties of Chinese. Also, elements of American and Australian slang have come through from imported television series. To date, other Asian languages like Japanese, Korean and other lesser known Chinese dialects such as Shanghainese have also been incorporated into Singlish."

It's interesting that Singlish is referred to here as a creole language - a "stable language that originates seemingly as a 'new' language, sometimes with features that are not inherited from any apparent source, without however qualifying in any appreciable way as a mixed language".

Beowulf Movie

I'm curious to see this for two reasons, one being to see how a Neil Gaiman script translates to the screen, the other being the fact it's a non-cartoony CGI animated film. (By cartoony, I mean Pixar-ish.) The last non-cartoony CGI animated film I saw, Renaissance, suffered from a screenplay that was rather hackneyed, unfortunately. However, it had an impressively unique visual style, so the thought of something with an equally striking look, scripted by a writer with Gaiman's track record, is an enticing prospect.

Not that I find everything Neil does to be brilliant, but one thing you can say about him is he rarely falls victim to cliche (unless they're his own, but I like writers who invent their own cliches more than those who simply use the same ones that everybody else uses).

But... I'm still going into Beowulf with low expectations, animation-wise. While the stills look fine, from the trailers I've seen the animation comes across as a little stiff. I hope to be pleasantly surprised...

The first Twilight Lady tale is now available at Lulu.com both in print and as a PDF download.

This 100-page collection harkens back to the days when the comic was called Cass Corridor and I used to update it an entire chapter at a time, yet worked at a much slower pace, sometimes taking anywhere from 3 to 9 months between updates.

Obviously, I've acquired more consistency and discipline since then (ie. grown more sadomasochistic).

After weeks of idea fermentation, I have begun work on a short story featuring the Hooded Lady character from Cass Corridor. This tale will be unveiled in the form of a weekly webcomic, updating every Sunday from its scheduled start date (which I estimate to be early February if all goes well).

Twilight Lady: "The Hidden Room" will provide a bit of insight into the mind of this mysterious, seemingly omnipotent being, revealing the one thing she covets most of all.

Weekly updates of the Cass Corridor webcomic resume Sunday August 20. When we last saw Rona, she was stuck in her astral form, surrounded by a gaggle of demonic entities. Or was she?

The entire series so far will soon be collected in print, and available in bookstores. The Cass Corridor graphic novel will be released early next year and the plan right now is to include a music CD or DVD along with the book. I'm still discussing the exact format with the publisher, so watch this space in the near future for further details.

Apart from making the webcomic available in print at last, this will also give the music wider distribution, which is exciting. How wide, however, depends on your support. I've gotten numerous queries from folks who wanted to buy The Hungry Ghost CD but couldn't find it in any stores, so now you'll have your chance.

As always, any help getting the word out is sincerely appreciated!

I've been in Southeast Asia the past month, and have fallen slightly behind on my schedule. As it'll take me a few weeks to catch up, the current update of Cass Corridor will be the last for awhile.

Look for the strip to return in early August, along with a very special announcement about the future of this supernatural saga.

Cass Corridor - the Weekly Strip

Sunday, March 19, 2006 marked the debut of Cass Corridor the Weekly Strip, which picks up where Book One left off. Rona Eden, our intrepid journalist, faces the dilemma of her life. Having come across the story of the century, she has to decide whether to bury or reveal the Hooded Lady's startling secret.

Unlike Chapters 1-8, this story will unfold in the vein of a newspaper comic strip, with weekly updates roughly 1-2 pages in length. The first installment is already up, and the next update will be this Sunday, and the next the following Sunday, and so on.

Eleanor Rigby, Father McKenzie, Stag Lee, & Billy Lyons

The names Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie are, of course, taken from the famous Beatles tune.

Stag Lee and Billy Lyons are historical figures whose exploits have been chronicled in numerous songs from the American folk music tradition.

Now, you might have noticed that these also happen to be names of characters in Cass Corridor. And you may be wondering... what's up with that?

The first online musical graphic novel?

Cass Corridor is a work-in-progress web comic, written and illustrated by yours truly, that introduces the Hooded Lady, a ghostly serial killer who haunts a Detroit neighborhood. Her victims have one thing in common... they long for death. Is she a predatory demon... or an angel of mercy?

The question takes on even greater relevance in Chapter 8, "Heaven is a Dark Place", as journalist Rona Eden's attempts to track down the Hooded Lady reaches an unexpected conclusion.

Trust me, you won't wanna miss this one! All previous chapters have been building up to this...

I've arranged it so you can read each chapter separately or in chronological order, with the song (from The Hungry Ghost CD) that the chapter title is based on playing in the background. Check out this cool multimedia experience.

This Cold Abyss

In Cass Corridor Chapter 7: "This Cold Abyss", Jason discovers that nothing in the afterlife is what it seems as his killer, the mysterious Hooded Lady, escorts him to a strange realm.

This chapter happens to be twice the length (and content) of previous ones, which is why it's taken this long to finish. Personally, I think it's the best work I've ever done. I certainly put a lot into it, so I hope it's worth the wait!

Story-wise, it features several key developments, and you also get to know the Lady a tad bit more.

Hyperbole: Epiphany

If you're based in the Los Angeles area, check out Hyperbole: Epiphany, a theatrical production that runs from August 12 - September 3 at Son of Semele in Silverlake. The show comprises of short vignettes set to original music, exploring "life’s ordinary moments of birth, adolescence, death, love, faith and chaos in extraordinary ways. The stories of epiphany are brought to life with music, stylized movement, digital video, theatrical effects and the use of over fifty puppets and masks". Sounds interesting, no?

Also, according to the show description, "the music serves to score each storyline and drive the plot of each mini-play". One of these segments will use Heaven is a Dark Place, a song from The Hungry Ghost CD. Needless to say, I'm curious to see what they do with it.

All Hulk Wants

Here's the first 9 pages of "All Hulk Wants", a fan comic I'm currently working on featuring everyone's favorite green-skinned goliath. Now, you may ask, what am I doing? Shouldn't I be recording that next album? Finishing Cass Corridor?

Well, that's the thing about not having a boss. You pretty much do whatever you want. I had a great idea for a story, got excited about it, and decided to make it reality.

Scary Town

Cass Corridor Chapter 6: "Scary Town" is the first of 3 parts which will form the 3rd issue of the Cass Corridor comic book (when it sees print). By the end of Chapter 8, many questions will be answered, such as: Who is this Hooded Lady, really? Where did she come from? Why does she kill? And why has Rona, of all people, met her in person and lived to tell the tale? How is Jen's friend, the priest who sees dead people, connected to all this?

With this chapter, I'm also experimenting a bit with format. If you have Windows Media Player, you can listen to the song "Scary Town" from The Hungry Ghost CD while reading the comic. Just click on the Play Audio link.

I implemented this idea on a whim. Some may find it odd, but I've tried it myself and it's actually kind of cool. It took me roughly the same amount of time to read the comic as the duration of the song (about 4 minutes).

Also, based on feedback from readers, I've changed the interface so you can now click from one page to the next.

Sick Among the Pure

Just read a review of The Hungry Ghost CD on Sick Among The Pure, which I found interesting. It always makes me glad, and proud, when a publication I dig chooses to write about my work. SATP contains well-written articles on a variety of 'alternative' subjects. For instance, in the current issue there's a fascinating piece on the incomparable Alan Moore focusing on his Promethea comic which I'm a big fan of.

Anyways, I appreciated the CD review for its honesty and, at the same time, sensitivity. The reviewer spelled out quite clearly what he liked and disliked about the album. The main reason I'm writing is to address his concerns about my being, as he puts it, "fixated upon vampires, ghosts, and werewolves". While I'd argue that there were only, perhaps, three songs on the CD in which this was explicit, I do know what he means. I never intended this to be a "concept album", but I can understand the listener having that impression. I had the same concerns when I listened to the finished recording, and I attribute it to the fact that a lot of feedback I received on my last album appeared to say that it lacked focus and cohesion. So maybe this was a backlash... I was subconsciously thinking, "OK, you want cohesion? I'm going to make an album so focused it'll make you claustrophobic!"

I'm not saying it's good or bad that it turned out that way, just my attempt at rationalizing my creative process. I've heard from folks who love the CD for the very reason others may have been put off by it. Ultimately, I follow my muse, wherever it takes me. Or at least I think I do. Perhaps I'm more affected by the opinions of others than I'd like to think I am. But aren't we all?

Cass Corridor preview and format questions

Just finished the artwork for the next chapter of Cass Corridor. It'll be ready to fly as soon as I'm done with the lettering. Here's a sneak preview of Rona in her 'altered state':

By the way, I was wondering what everyone thinks of the interface for the comic. You know, the way you read each page by pointing your cursor at a number. It's a format I envisioned awhile back, and haven't changed since.

How do you like it? If you managed to breeze through all 5 chapters so far, chances are it works for you. However, you may have found it got in the way of your enjoyment of the comic, or you might be one of those who gave up while waiting for the graphics to load. Either way, love it or hate it, I'd like to hear from as many of you as possible so I can get a consensus.

I will either stick with the current format or find a new one, depending on the response I get.

In Cass Corridor Chapter One: "The Lady with the Smile" , there's a scene where Rona explains to Jen why she's always open to extreme possibilities, using the following analogy: say you're a fish living in the sea, and one day you encounter a human diver. You tell other fish about this strange sight you just witnessed. Naturally, most of them think you're crazy.

It recently occurred to me to give credit where it's due as far as where I got the idea for this exchange. I had been reading a book called The Fourth Dimension: A Guided Tour of the Higher Universes by Rudy Rucker. It's a real mind-bender, which I highly recommend to anyone who's ever questioned their surroundings and wondered what else is out there besides what we see, hear, and experience during our waking moments.

The reason I'm asking is that the most recent review posted is by a gentleman who - in my humble opinion - needs to get a life. Why do I say this? Not because he completely trashed my work, which he did. Nothing to do with that. I get trashed all the time. For me, if you're pissing people off, you must be doing something right.

No, the reason I think this guy has too much time on his hands is - get this - he has not listened to the album he's reviewing. How do I know? Because he admits it.

So please, go to Amazon.com and add your 2 cents. Your review doesn't even have to be positive. In fact, make it as honest and truthful as you can. All I ask is that you've listened to the CD all the way through. At least once.
